There are four Faculties at the University namely:

• Faculty of Arts
• Faculty of Economics, Business and Law
• Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies
• Faculty of the Sciences

History of the University of New England
The University of New England was the first regional university in Australia. It has a national and international reputation for academic excellence dating back to 1938. This high standard of exellence is reflected in the university motto: EX SAPIENTIA MODUS - Out of Wisdom Comes Moderation

It is situated in the city of Armidale in the picturesque New England Tablelands region of the state of New South Wales. The University of New England has a long and enviable reputation as a provider of quality education, and combines a commitment to teaching excellence and advanced research.

First Class Facilities in the centre of Brisbane
The campus is located on 6 acres of riverfront property at Kangaroo Point, surrounding historic Shafston House. The campus includes all the facilities expected at a major modern university. Facilities include; a library, IT centre, restaurant and cafe, on-campus accommodation, gymnasium, and recreation areas. Close proximity to ferry (Mowbray Park) and bus (Shafston Avenue) terminals.

Small Classes/Intensive Teaching
At UNE, students enjoy unique learning opportunities. Class sizes are kept small and class contact hours are higher than most universities. Students are expected to attend at least 16 hours per week of lectures and tutorials (compared to only 12 hours per week for comparable undergraduate courses at other universities).

Tertiary Preparation Program
An intensive four week course to help students identify and enhance skills required for academic success. Subjects covered include: Mathematics, Communication, Academic Writing, Australia’s Place in the Global Market, Introducing Computers and the World Wide Web, University Research and Study Skills.

Independent studies prove that tertiary preparation programs, small class sizes and higher contact hours dramatically improve a student’s examination results.

FLEXIBILITY

Flexible Selection Criteria
Admission determined by interview, not just OP ranking. UNE @ Shafston understands that a student’s work and educational experiences assist with their future learning.

Non QTAC Entry
Enrol directly with UNE at Shafston, not through QTAC. Students can talk directly to the people who can assist them in making the right choice for them.

HECS Equivalent Fees
Competitive fees and payment plans to cater for individual needs.

This understanding of students’ needs provides students with the flexibility for work and family commitments in addition to their study schedule.

Flexible Study Options
Study full time, part time, day and/or evening. All study options are provided for the student’s convenience.

Trimesters
Complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree at UNE @ Shafston in just over two years. By offering trimesters UNE’s innovative approach to education allows students to enter second year university ahead of students proceeding through traditional pathways.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Advanced standing allows prior learning to be counted towards a new award provided the student still meets the rules of the new award.

CHOICE

Upgrade OP Rank
Students can upgrade their OP rank to between OP 5 and OP 9 in just two semesters and earn up to 8 units of credit towards their degree.

Graduate with a Diploma from UNE @ Shafston; or Commence in their second year of a degree at UNE @ Shafston or UNE (Armidale); or All first year programs (Diploma Programs) give students up to one year’s credit (8 units) and increase their options to secure a QTAC place (HECS) in a degree of their choice in 2003 at all Queensland universities including:

• The University of Queensland
• QUT
• Griffith University
• The University of Southern Queensland
• James Cook University

First year programs (Diploma Programs) provide a pathway into:

• Business and Commerce
• Law
• IT and Computer Science
• Arts
• Teaching
• Psychology
• Asian Studies
• Sports Science
• And a range of similar degrees.

SERVICE

Accommodation Services
UNE offers a range of accommodation options on campus including river front apartments. Each university apartment is equipped with a personal computer with free internet access 24 hours a day, fully equipped kitchen (with a microwave oven, refrigerator, hot plate, kettle, toaster, and cooking utensils), bed, wardrobe, study desk and lamp, private telephone, television, dining table and bathroom.

Student Employment Services
Many students wish to undertake part time employment while studying. Our ‘Job Club’ helps UNE students to find paid employment in Brisbane within a wide range of industries.

Industry Placement
UNE enjoys close associations with local and international companies located in Brisbane. Our Internship Officer places many UNE students in part time positions with leading Queensland businesses while they study.
