Everyday is different and possibilities in life are endless. These two very important concepts govern my perspective of life. I enjoy keeping myself ‘fresh’ and ‘alert’. That is why; my journey has taken me to several destinations around the world. I was born in Singapore and have lived in several other countries to date including Indonesia, Australia and Mexico. In particular, my four years of experiences in Australia were the most interesting.

Australian Education NewsBeing an international student in Australia was both challenging and rewarding. Initially, I only had plans to study in Brisbane, Australia. My university undergraduate and post-graduate courses were both interesting and challenging. These courses led to many important professional contacts as well as real industry experience. Through these contacts, I gradually began working as well. This combination of work and study demanded good time management especially when socializing was an important factor of my overseas experience. I had made it a personal goal to immerse myself in the Australian culture.

Frankly, it was not as difficult as some people make it to be. I find Australians to be friendly and open-minded. I had to question myself: am I open minded and friendly as well? The answer was a simple yes. Although uncomfortable at first, soon enough, I found myself participating in several social events and gathering. In my opinion, the best way to understand a culture is be socially active and alert. Not only did this occupy my social agenda, but I improved my ability in the classroom. I was able to comfortably contribute in class room conversations regarding university assignments – especially those requiring group work. Subsequently, this ability enhanced my professional etiquette when I was offered the job of a researcher in my university.

My professional experience as a researcher in my university was crucial in providing a wholesome Australian experience. I found my work colleagues to be easy to talk to, helpful and knowledgeable. It is obvious that I did not connect personally with all of them, but a handful of my co-workers became good friends. I still keep in touch with them till today! Of my professional experiences, I would also like to place emphasis on my 2 years experience with the International Student Services within my university as an Assisting Accommodation Officer. My job duties comprised giving daily presentations to new International students on living in Brisbane. Within this presentation, I discussed living needs, transportation needs, financial needs and recreational needs. After each session, I would engage students to ask questions they might have about their new environment. This was a fruitful experience as I got to meet many international students who bring with them their own culture, perspective, language and ideas. That is why I consider Australia to be the melting pot of nationalities with intensive cultural exchanges.

My continued interest in helping International students is a gratifying one. I strive to impart my experiences and journeys in Australia to others who are ‘game’ enough to take this path. So if you would like to ask or discuss anything at all do feel free to contact me. I completely understand that every inquiry is unique and hence deserves a unique response.
