Programme At-A-Glance

Duration  of training: Up to 6 months starting at any time during the year. If the terms of the internship agreement are met by both parties, and both parties request an extension for up to a further 6 months, this request may be favourably received by the New Zealand Immigration Service.

Eligibility: Applicants are enrolled in a fulltime tertiary course, and a practical work placement is a requirement of their course of study in order to complete the course. Evidence of a high standard of both written and spoken English. 

Visa Category: Work Visa (Work Experience category)

Insurance: All participants are required to have comprehensive medical,                                  accident and liability insurance which meets New Zealand government                                    requirements.

Procedure for Application: 

• Applicants apply in English to Internship NZ on the official Internship NZ application form stating their preferred field of employment. A comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV), an English Language Assessment, as well as some further documents from the university must also be provided. 
• After Internship NZ has screened these documents in the sending country, the application is sent to Internship NZ for a work placement.
• The applicant will receive the completed “Employer Offer”, with suggested dates of employment.  Applicants will return the completed “Internship Agreement” form with their signature on the “Student Declaration” form, which establishes the mutual agreement between employer and trainee.
• Internship NZ will then issue a formal letter detailing the applicant’s employment information, and supporting the Visa application. It is the responsibility of applicants to ensure that the proposed placement meets the course requirements of their educational institution.

Role of Employer: Offer a position to the overseas applicant and complete the Employer Section of the Internship Agreement Form. Oversee the training of the participant according to the Internship Agreement, and complete the final evaluation of the participant’s training. Provide payment as per internship offer on the Internship Agreement Form, and meet NZ government requirements for payment of taxes and accident compensation (ACC) levies.

Role of Internship NZ:  As a NZ government-authorized sponsor, Internship NZ screens applicants, obtains a suitable work placement, ensures that a training scheme is mutually agreed on by the employer and the trainee, and provides orientation. Internship NZ also arranges some arrival services and offers 24-hour Emergency Assistance to participants as well as employers in New Zealand.
 
Cost: Each applicant is charged a fee to cover the programme costs. There is no fee to New Zealand employers.
