Canada Immigration Skilled Worker

This category is applicable to all of you who fulfill basic requirements in:

  • Skills
  • Age
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Language ability
  • Adaptability

Other qualities needed to participate in the Canadian labour market
The selection criteria focus on occupation, education and training, experience, age, and knowledge of English and/or French. Bonus points are given if relatives in Canada are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Skilled Class is primarily point based and confers permanent resident status to you if you are able to demonstrate an ability to become economically established in Canada. You are assessed under six factors and numerous sub factors of assessment providing for 100 points.

If you do not meet the applicable pass mark you may be accepted under the positive discretion provisions of the regulations. This mechanism is used to accept a number of applicants who will be able to successfully settle in Canada yet who do meet the applicable pass mark.

The Skilled Class selection model is designed to identify economic migrants who will be able to provide a significant economic benefit to Canada. This is not to imply that economic migrants do not also provide important social benefits to Canada, but the primary goal of their selection should be their positive economic impact. To be accepted as a Skilled migrant, you must:

  • meet the minimum work experience requirements (at least one year);
  • prove that you have the funds required for settlement; and
  • earn enough points in the six selection factors to meet the pass mark

Skilled migration is beneficial to Canada as well as to yourself. According to statistics economic migrants average higher employment earnings than the general Canadian population, even as early as one year after they arrived in Canada. Skilled migrants economically outperform other migrants and have even economically outperformed the average Canadian worker. You may need assessment from professional bodies and educational institutions depending on your occupation, qualifications and training.

A selection system can be designed to reflect the factors that would lead to economic success for the majority of applicants; it cannot, however, reflect the specific personalized elements that might lead to success or failure for every applicant. Discretion can be either positive, whereby an officer believes that a prospective migrant who has not received sufficient selection points should nevertheless be accepted, or negative, whereby an officer believes that a prospective migrant who has received sufficient points should, nevertheless, be refused.
