International Education FAQs

Will I receive English language support at an ACT school?
At present, ACT schools have no English language proficiency requirements for
international students. To get into the ACT school system, an international student with little or no English language skills has two options available to him/her:

  • Introductory English Centres (IEC) offer English courses prior to mainstream school entry
  • There are English language bridging programs that involve intensive English courses coupled with mainstream learning

The aim of these programs is to develop the abilities of students in the four key
learning areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing. Study and IT skills are also
developed during these courses.

Every student must partake in any of these two options until he/she is competent enough
to join mainstream learning without language support.

Satisfactory academic progress over the previous two years of schooling is a requirement
for international students if they are to be offered a place at an ACT government school.
Introductory English Centres (IEC)

Currently, there are three centres for primary students and one for secondary. Admission
is available to students whose first language is not English.

These programs involve:

  • 12 students per class
  • Study of mainstream curriculum subjects
  • An introduction to Australian society and culture
